چکیده

The merger of compact binaries, especially black holes and neutron stars, is frequently invoked to explain gamma-ray bursts (GRB’s). In this paper, we present three dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of the relatively neglected mergers of white dwarfs and black holes. During the merger, the white dwarf is tidally disrupted and sheared into an accretion disk. Nuclear reactions are followed and the energy release is negligible. Peak accretion rates are ∼0.05 M s −1 (less for lower mass white dwarfs) lasting for approximately a minute. Many of the disk parameters can be explained by a simple analytic model which we derive and compare to our simulations. This model can be used to predict accretion rates for white dwarf and black hole (or neutron star) masses which are not simulated here. Although the mergers studied here create disks with larger radii, and longer accretion times than those from the merger of double Now at: Astronomy Group, University of Leicester, Leicester LE1 7RH

Collapse of Neutron Stars to Black Holes in Binary Systems: a Model for Short Gamma Ray Bursts

The accretion of ≈ 0.1 – 1 M⊙ of material by a neutron star through Roche lobe overflow of its companion or through white-dwarf/neutron-star coalescence in a low mass binary system could be enough to exceed the critical mass of a neutron star and trigger its collapse to a black hole, leading to the production of a short gamma-ray burst (SGRB). In this model, SGRBs would often be found in early-...

Accretion Models of Gamma-Ray Bursts

Many models of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) involve accretion onto a compact object, usually a black hole, at a mass accretion rate of order a fraction of a solar mass per second. If the accretion disk is larger than a few tens or hundreds of Schwarzschild radii, the accretion will proceed via a convection-dominated accretion flow (CDAF) in which most of the matter escapes to infinity rather than fa...

Short γ-ray Bursts and Gravitational Waves from Dynamically Formed Merging Binaries

Merging binary systems consisting of two collapsed objects are among the most promising sources of high frequency gravitational wave, GW, signals for ground based interferometers. Double neutron star or black hole/neutron star mergers are also believed to give rise to short hard bursts, SHBs, a subclass of gamma ray bursts. SHBs might thus provide a powerful way to infer the merger rate of two-...

Brightness from the Blackest Night: Bursts of Gamma Rays and Gravity Waves from Black Hole Binaries

We use recent results in binary stellar evolution to argue that binaries with at least one black hole dominate the rate of compact-object mergers. Two phenomena generally attributable to such mergers, gamma-ray bursts and gravity-wave bursts, are therefore likely to originate from near the event horizon of a black hole. In addition to sheer numbers, black holes have an added advantage over neut...

Tidal Interaction between a Fluid Star and a Kerr Black Hole: Relativistic Roche-Riemann Model

We present a semi-analytic study of the equilibrium models of close binary systems containing a fluid star (mass m and radius R0) and a Kerr black hole (mass M) in circular orbit. We consider the limit M ≫ m where spacetime is described by the Kerr metric. The tidally deformed star is approximated by an ellipsoid, and satisfies the polytropic equation of state. The models also include fluid mot...
